Little girls are not the key audience for women’s sport

October 11, 2016 By Danielle Warby Leave a Comment

We, the media and advocates for women in sport, need to stop this obsession with inspiring girls.

Yes, visibility is terribly important, girls can’t be what they can’t see but little girls aren’t going to drive more eyeballs, more bums on seats, more advertising dollars. They aren’t the key audience for women in sport, adult men and women are.

When you make assumptions about who your audience is, you risk alienating the rest of us. Don’t do that.

And for the record, I’ll be attending the Sydney 7s to see our Olympic gold medalists in action. You should too. Get your tickets here.
